Abellera hermitage

A building from the year 1570 embedded in a cave in a 1020 m cliff

It is located 2km away from Prades. To get there, take the path off to the left from the road that goes to La Febró and Capafonts, that passes through a small housing development. The chapel is a building, dating from 1570, built into a 1,020m-high crag, in a cave that had been used previously as a shelter.
In 1484 Fra Bernat Boil lived there, the first Apostolic priest in the West Indies, who accompanied Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to America.
The icon of the Virgin of l'Abellera was found by a shepherd when he went to get honey, so goes the tale. Also, according to folklore, Queen Margarida of Prades took refuge in this place. The first building dates from 1570, and in 1578 the tower was added. It has a single nave and from the outside there are spectacular views over the valleys and mountains.
