The hermitage of the Mare de Déu de la Riera (Virgin of the Stream)

Brief review

The hermitage is located 800m west of the village, across the Alforja stream. The road is tarmacked and so is easy by car or on foot. There is car parking at the chapel.
The old Romanesque chapel dedicated to Saint Bartholomew, dated from the twelfth century, collapsed in 1903. Another one was built, completed in 1904.
At the end of the war (1936-1939), as the Republican Army was retreating, it was blown up along with the entire arsenal of weapons and ammunition stored inside. Reconstruction was carried out in 1954, closely following the modernist style of the original model.
The venerated icon of the Mare de Déu de la Riera, a thirteenth century polychrome sculpture, was moved in 1981 to the village church.
The procession, held on September 7, from the church to the chapel is a great tradition, accompanied by a group of devils. The pilgrimage dates back to the eighteenth century, but was only first documented in 1850.
