The castle Escornalbou monastery rises majestically on one of the last hills of the coastal mountains. It faces the sea and it has a privileged view over the villages at its feet. The fortress has its origin in the Reconquest, when King Alfonso I el Casto gave the place as a present to Joan Santboià in order to repopulate the area. Thus, in the early twelfth century, a fortress, a church dedicated to Saint Michael and an Augustinian monastery were built near the remains of ancient Roman and Saracen towers. From this hub the vast territory of the barony was controlled. This included L'Argentera, Colldejou, Duesaigües, Riudecanyes, Vilanova d'Escornalbou, Fontaubella Tower and the Teixeta Pradell. After two centuries, poor management of property and territory of the monastery community led to the decline of the area. A community of Franciscans was established later on, who lived there until the confiscation of 1835. The building remained abandoned and the legend that was a haunted place was created. In the early twentieth century, diplomat Eduard Toda Reus bought the building and restored it to build a mansion, which had an impressive library of over 60,000 books. Some years later, due to the diplomat's economic problems, the castle-monastery was sold out. Several people owned it until it was finally bought by the Government and the Provincial Government of Tarragona in 1983.
Currently, the complex is visited by tourists. In the old monastery there is the church, a Romanesque one with Gothic details. There is also a crypt, a cloister and a chapter house, where the community used to met to discuss internal matters of the monastery. Surrounding the monastery there is a small forest of cork oak, with unique characteristics in the area of Tarragona. There are old paths that connected the castle-monastery with the villages. Some of them are still beautifully paved and they allow us to make a real journey through the history of the barony of Escornalbou.
