THE CARLISTS’ HIDEOUT

Vilaplan lies at the foot of the Prades mountains, watched over by the uninhabited hamlet of La Mussara. The two villages, their imposing cliffs and their valleys offer very beautiful spots, hidden corners that were also a refuge for guerrilla fighters. One of them, the Carlist leader Cercós, died in the cave known as “L’Hospital dels Carlins” (the Carlists’ Hospital) and was buried in secret in La Mussara cemetery. Legend says that the hatred he aroused among his Liberal enemies led a group to go to the cemetery and, when they could not manage to find his grave, symbolically shoot one of the coffins, where an old lady called Boronada was buried.

Start the route

Leave the village of Vilaplana heading towards the Les Tosques path, marked as a local path (PR) and mostly paved, and climb up the hill, crossing the ravine several times. You reach La Mussara, with Punta de les Airasses providing an excellent viewpoint over the Costa Daurada. From Les Airasses, go down towards Els Masos path and continue on the level until you find the way down to the Garrigots path, which will take you back to the village, down from the impressive cliffs to the fertile valley.
