The heart of Mont-roig del Camp is located at 110 meters altitude and in the center of the Costa Dorada, one of the major tourist destinations in Catalonia, surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea and caressed by the mountains of the Serra de Llaberia.

The strategic location of Mont-roig del Camp and Miami Platja is the ideal starting point for all kinds of excursions, visits and activities. Theme parks, adventure sports, stocks of major interest Tarragona, Roman Heritage, Reus or Barcelona, are available to all and a few miles away.

The municipality of Mont-roig is quite extensive, with 63.69 km ² and over 12 miles of beaches ranging from the stream of Riudecanyes (bordering Cambrils) to the river Llastres (bordering the Vandellos-L'Hospitalet de l’Infant).
Currently Mont-roig del Camp has more than 12,500 registered inhabitants and distributed among the nuclei of Mont-roig, Miami Platja, Les Pobles and more than twenty neighborhoods. Six campsites, two premium quality rgive a plus in quality tourism. During the summer, in Mont-roig, there are between seventy and eighty berries thousand people. The main sources of wealth in our municipality are tourism, construction, agriculture and services. In 2003 the Government said Mont-roig del Camp tourist town.

 

History

Mont-roig del Camp is a municipality that belongs administratively in the region of Costa Dorada and the natural and historic region of Camp de Tarragona.

The first document which speaks of our people we found on 23 January 1118, when Ramon Berenguer III the prime contractor to Sant Oleguer archbishop of Tarragona, to restore the metropolitan and repopulate the area. Within the limits of this donation goes Mont-roig. If the year 1118, already mentioned our people and knowing that that year had not yet begun to repopulate the Camp de Tarragona effective, would demonstrate that Mont-roig existed at the time of the Arab occupation.

The Charter of the Town of Mont-roig date of August 13, 1180, when the archbishop of Tarragona, Berenguer Vilademuls, with the consent of King Alfons I and Bertran de Castellet, granted to the inhabitants of Mont-roig houses, land and property throughout the term, except for the furnace and the forge.
Later joined Mont-roig Guardamar terms or Miramar (in 1356 was 5 fires and in 1365 was 13) and in 1496 bought the term in Pobla d’en Taudell (Rifà ravine between the Riudecanyes, the road Pratdip old and the sea).

 

Places of Interest

Virgin of the Rock shrine

The shrines of Verge de la Roca and St. Ramon de Penyafort are ingeniously integrated into the Red Mountain Roca, the most distinctive enclave of Mont-roig, which gives the village its name. The Roca Mountain is rich in nature, landscape, faith, history, tradition and legend.
The present sanctuary was built on the remains of a medieval castle located in the same place where the chapel, now you can admire some of its vestiges. Have also been documented prehistoric remains of the first settlers, where pre-Christian worship of the goddess Isis Egyptian archaeological has been certified from a fragment of Roman tombstone.
The shrine of Verge de la Roca is one of the main centers of Marian devotion in the region, has also been a source of inspiration for artists, which include the brilliant painter Joan Miró.
The feast of the Virgin is celebrated on September 8, and the image venerated was sculpted by local artist Francesc Javaloy 1980.

Chapel of Peiró

The chapel of Peiró was built in the year 1752 and has a simple architecture and welcoming. The visitor who goes to walk can enjoy a relaxing short walk, discovering the typical landscape of the area. The chapel has a recreation area, built in the pine forests of Peiró, offers a picnic area.

New church of Sant Miquel

The New Church of Sant Miquel, also known as the "Cathedral of the Costa Dorada" by their large size. The church was begun in 1801, today still unfinished.
The church is located on an island of twenty-two houses were pulled down to his work, although it is believed that in the twelfth century a castle was located in the same space.
This ambitious project has adapted popular at different times of crisis, prosperity, peace and war. In 1835, with the confiscation of Mendizabal church building froze and was not until 1942 that resumed with the help of Fr. Gaietà Ivern.

In 1947 the first Mass was celebrated at the altar, but the church was unfinished. In 1962 began the frescos inside by Jaume Minguell, these paintings show various biblical landscapes and social reality of the time.

Old Church (Centre Miró)

The parish church of Mont-roig was built after the conquest in the late twelfth century, so it is no coincidence that is dedicated to Sant Miquel the Archangel, worship documented the Archbishopric of Tarragona in 1091.

The Old Church has experienced many vicissitudes, and various extensions and the incidence of war: even today some of the mont-rogencs older remember how all the altars burned in 1936. Later the building became the parish hall, cultural center and, since 2004, the Center Miró.

Sinks

This is a publicly owned public works designed to wash, documented in the eighteenth century. They are located outside the perimeter of the old medieval walls.

Miro Center

Miró Center is a performance space that offers the possibility of seeing, if only in facsimile reproductions, the set of pictures related to Mont-roig and painted by the artist explaining the relationship with Mont-roig, both about the painter as his work. In addition to the 22 reproductions of the paintings on display in a didactic and atmosphere with the Mont-roig of the time, we can find the original tapestry "The Lizard gold feathers" drawn by Joan Miró and Josep Royo prepared by the six "Miró Dolls" and two audiovisual Marti Rom, in a painter talks about his relationship with Mont-roig and the other people of the people who were related to him, speak of Miró.

Dry Stone Barracks

In the municipality there are over a hundred listed dry stone huts, these buildings made by specialized farmers have a good state of preservation, and a remarkable diversity of styles and shapes.

Sole Oil Museum

Guided Tours

To visit places as emblematic of the municipality, such as the Verge de la Roca, the Church of Sant Miquel Miró and the Centre, the Department of Tourism Guided tours in several languages, during the months of July and August takes place on Friday morning, and for the rest of the year offers this service to groups, and always by appointment.
 

The Mountain Bike Centre

The Mountain Bike Centre Mont-roig del Camp - Miami Platja, unique at the Costa Dorada, reveals the uniqueness of our environment on wheels. The Mountain Bike Centre has a total of 143 km divided into 10 routes marked according to their degree of difficulty. The routes start from the Point of Reception located in Mont-roig del Camp, which offers the service of bicycles for adults and children, child seat, bike wash, showers and general tourist information. It is a freely accessible space designed for practitioners of mountain biking (Mountain Bike).
